The holiday season brings joy, cheer, and reason for heightened awareness. Beware of residential burglars.
Residential burglaries are a year-round concern. However, during the holiday season, burglaries are much more damaging. In addition to the sense of violation, a burglary during this time of the year can ruin many people's holidays.
While there are no foolproof methods for avoiding becoming a victim of a burglary, there are certain tips that can be followed in an attempt to reduce the likelihood of being victimized.
1. If you'll be gone for long periods during the day, ask that neighbors keep an eye on your house.
2. Be sure that all doors and windows are locked before you leave.
3. Close all drapes, curtains, and blinds before you leave.
4. If you have an alarm system, be sure to set it each and every time you leave the house.
5. If you have an alarm system, contact your alarm company and ask how you can have your system tested to ensure that it is working properly.
6. Avoid letting burglars know what's in your house by not placing empty electronics boxes out for trash. TV boxes, DVD player boxes, and computer boxes should be ripped up or cut up and placed into a trash bag.
7. If you won't be returning home until after dark, place several interior and exterior lights on timers.
8. If you have a home surveillance camera system, be sure to test your system regularly to ensure that it is working properly.
9. Finally, if your home is burglarized, don't touch anything and call the police right away. The best chance that the police have at collecting evidence is at an undisturbed crime scene.
