Prevent home fires - Please dispose of fireplace ashes properly!
With chilly temperatures there is an increase in the use of fireplaces to help heat homes. Unfortunately, the Folsom Fire Department has also seen an increase in the number of fires that are caused by the improper disposal of fireplace ashes. We want to pass on a few fire safety tips to prevent these types of fires at your home:
1. Always allow ashes to cool before disposing of them.
2. Dispose of ashes in a metal container, never in a paper bag or plastic trash container.
3. Keep the ash container 10 feet away from your house or combustible fence.
It is also a good idea to have your chimney and fireplace inspected annually to prevent chimney fires. There are a number companies that offer this service.
Finally, test your smoke alarms monthly and replace the batteries every six months.
