Sheriff's Homicide detectives have identified the suspect in the shooting involving an off-duty deputy on the 60 (Pomona) freeway on Friday.

Suspect Armando Gonzalez, a 25-year old male Mexican national, resident of Maywood, remains hospitalized in critical condition. He was booked for Attempted Murder and his bail is set at $1 million.

Sheriff's Homicide Lt. Don Slawson and sheriff's Homicide Bureau detectives are continuing to investigate the shooting.

Sheriff's Homicide detectives responded to the eastbound Pomona (60) Freeway at Santa Anita Avenue, South El Monte, to investigate the circumstances surrounding a shooting involving an off-duty deputy sheriff.

The deputy was not injured. The suspect was wounded and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. He is in critical condition.

Homicide Detectives have learned that an off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy was driving home eastbound on the Pomona (60) Freeway at about 2:20PM when he was confronted by another driver (the suspect).

The male Hispanic suspect pulled his Ford Expedition up along the left side of the deputy's car and motioned to the deputy, the deputy motioned back as if to ask what the suspect wanted. The deputy said he saw the suspect reach down, and fearing that he was arming himself, the deputy accelerated away from the suspect. The suspect again caught up along the left side of the deputy's car, pulled out a handgun, and fired at the deputy. The deputy returned fire.

The deputy pulled away from the suspect and ultimately pulled over on the side of the 60 Freeway near Santa Anita Avenue to use his cell phone to call for help.

While the deputy was stopped on the side of the freeway, the suspect pulled up behind the deputy's car, and there was a second shooting. The suspect drove away from the scene and exited the freeway in South El Monte.

The California Highway Patrol received numerous phone calls from passers-by reporting the incident on the freeway.

Temple Sheriff's Station, which polices the city of South El Monte, soon received phone calls from people saying they saw a man by a stopped car with blood on his shirt on Santa Anita Avenue, north of the 60 freeway. Deputies responded to the scene and discovered it was the suspect, who had been hit in the face by gunfire.

A handgun was recovered from inside the suspect's car.

Unfortunately, due to this incident, all eastbound lanes of the 60 freeway had to be closed for over half an hour, and the far right lane of the freeway had to be closed for over an hour for the investigation.

The suspect has not yet been identified.

The investigation is continuing.

Attorneys with the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review also respond to the scene, and have full access to the facts known to the Sheriff's Department throughout every phase of these thorough investigations. Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.
