On December 10, 2010 employees of the Thurmont Feed Store reported their business had been burglarized. The suspect had gained entry to the business, located the safe, and had cut a hole in the side of the safe with a cutting tool. Approximately $657.00 was reported to have been stolen from the safe. During the course of the investigation, Officer Stanley collected numerous items of evidence. This evidence was sent to the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division for DNA analysis. The Thurmont Police Department received positive results from the DNA analysis which identified Michael P. Mehaffie, age 42, of Thurmont as the suspect in this burglary and theft. On April 12, 2011 Officer Stanley and Officer Morales took Mr. Mehaffie in custody and served an arrest warrant charging Mr. Mehaffie with: Second Degree Burglary, Fourth Degree Burglary, Theft: Less $1,000 value, and Destruction of Property less $500. Upon his initial appearance with a District Court Commissioner, Mr. Mehaffie was released on a $25,000 bond.
