The Sheriff’s Office has been utilizing the Nixle service since the first of the year with great feedback from the community. Nixle has been advertising for the last two years in an attempt to recruit public safety agencies to join their service in order to alert the public to community information. During their advertisement, Nixle has always touted the service as free to public safety agencies. Now with over 6,000 public safety agencies on board, and using their service at full speed, Nixle has announced that they will begin charging public safety agencies for using the Nixle service.

Nixle announced that the fees for using their services would be based on population of each jurisdiction. Based on Nash County’s population, our fee to continue using this service would be $6,000 annually! With budgets as tight as they are, not only in Nash County, but as far up as the State level, we do not feel like we can pay this ridiculous fee to continue using the Nixle service.

So here is what will change. The NCSO will still continue to use the Nixle Basic Edition which is free. However this Basic Edition seriously limits what you can do. It only allows us to put out “emergency information” for emergency situations, and not any of the community information that we have been using it for. It also will no longer carry the email portion of it, meaning you will not receive emails from Nixle if you are signed up for emails. You will only receive text messages. We have been on the Nixle system since the first of the year and we have not put out the first “Emergency” message, so our use of Nixle will be limited in the future. All of these changes are set to take place fairly quickly, as they begin on April 29th.
