Enid Police SWAT Team takes 1st place in State Competition

On May 4th, 2011 the Enid Police Department SWAT Team traveled to Norman Oklahoma to compete in the 7th annual State wide SWAT Team competition. There were teams from all around the State of Oklahoma present. During the state wide competition the Enid Police Department SWAT Team took 1st place in overall team competition. “I think that speaks volumes to the hard work, training and dedication these officers have, Capt. Dean Grassino said”. The department’s SWAT is comprised of 14 members with 12 officers from the department from various divisions and ranks as operators. Grassino is the commander of the department’s SWAT Team and Lt. Gary Fuxa is assistant commander.

This competition was different then what was used in the past. The competition was based on US National SWAT Finals competition events and was geared toward physical agility, speed and accuracy involving both team and individual events. Some of the events included a sniper challenge, multiple officer relays involving obstacle courses and multiple gun challenges. Also part of the challenge was for team leaders to develop strategies immediately once an event was introduced to the team. “This was a very competitive competition with teams from much larger departments and having more resources, Lt. Fuxa said”. “I am very proud of the team members for their consistent dedication to always better themselves.” They always go above and beyond both physically and mentally. The department’s SWAT Team has taken part in the State SWAT Team competition since 2006 and has always finished in the team overall competition in the top five with several individuals placing first in the individual events. The team practices throughout the year a minimum of 20 hours per month in all conditions to always be prepared. “I think this speaks to the quality of the men and woman working in the department” Fuxa said.
