WAVES Reminds People How to Stay Safe and Beat the Heat
June 2, 2011 (Camillus, NY)- As Summer approaches, the public safety and emergency services would like to remind our community how to stay safe and beat the heat all summer long.
Here are some quick tips for staying cool:
Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water. Even if you aren't thirsty! If you are on the go, carry a refillable water bottle with you.

Taking a bath or a shower is a great way of cooling down.
Turn on the sprinkler or head to the beach, the pool or a water park. Playing in water keeps you cool and takes your mind off the heat.

Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks; they actually help dehydrate your body.

When in doubt drink more water.

Dress for Success

Dress in lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. Cotton or moisture wicking materials that pull the moisture away from your body are best.
Block the sun's harmful rays and reduce your chance of sunburn. Wear a hat and Sun block, with a high SPF rating, is an important piece of your outfit as well!

Be Sensible & Responsible

The sun is the hottest between noon and 4 p.m. This is a good time to stay indoors or at least in the shade.

Limit vigorous activity during the hottest part of the day.
Check on your neighbors and friends regularly, especially the elderly or individuals in poor health.

Be Cool

Use a spray bottle to mist your face, a small personal fan, an umbrella hat, or a thermal-cool neck wrap to stay cool.

If the temperature is above 90 degrees, fans alone often cannot protect you against heat-related illness. Find your way to air conditioning!

Eat Right

Avoid heavy foods and opt for foods high in water content like fruits, salads, and soups.
Eat smaller meals, more frequently.

Always Remember!!!

Heat related injuries range from dehydration, to heat exhaustion, to the most serious form, heat stroke. Watch for the following signs and symptoms, and seek medical attention or call 911 right away if you have any of the following:

Dizziness, fainting, confusion

 Nausea and/or vomiting

 Heavy sweating or, in severe cases, no sweating at all

 Headache, clammy or unusually dry skin

 Rapid pulse, heat cramps
