Chief Greg Butler resigned from the Montpelier Police Department effective June 24, 2011.
Dear Citizens of Montpelier:
I am writing you to let you know I have resigned from the Montpelier Police Department, effective June 24. I do so with a heavy heart. Being your chief of police was a dream job. I was paid to go out and build relationships with you, the citizens of this great state and county.
I am so proud of the men and women of the Montpelier police department. In just under three short years we accomplished so much, i.e., Bear Lake Bright Tomorrows, a center for professional interviewing and counseling of our most precious commodity, our children, a professionally trained police investigator and crime scene technician, a victim’s advocate to help victims of crime navigate the criminal justice system, fight for their right to be heard, and assist them in moving forward with their lives, a school resource officer in our schools building relationships with our youth, a tri-state law enforcement group comprised of Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming law enforcement officers working together to solve our shared problems.
I have enjoyed the wonderful working relationships with the great volunteer organizations, Fire, EMS, and Search and Rescue, whose members serve with such dedication. I would also like to thank Sheriff Brent Bunn for his mentoring when I first came to Montpelier nearly three years ago as well as all other great employees of Montpelier City. You really have dedicated hard working city employees!
But what I will miss most is just driving around our city and exchanging waves as I passed other motorists. That just didn’t happen where I came from. It’s a great feeling!
I am resigning because I have aging family that needs more support than I can provide being three hours away. A recent opportunity has allowed me to move back closer to my family and I had to jump at it.
I have been proud to serve as your chief.
Greg Butler
