(Update) Deputy-Involved Hit Shooting on Thursday in Hawthorne
Sheriff's deputies from South Los Angeles Station were involved in a shooting after making a traffic stop in Hawthorne last night.
Shortly before 7:00PM Thursday evening (06/23/2011) deputies assigned to South Los Angeles Sheriff's Station were patrolling the area when they saw a known gang member and parolee at large walking in the 12800 block of South Prairie Avenue, Hawthorne.
When the deputies made a U-turn in order to contact the suspect, he entered a car that was parked in the front lot of a business. When the deputies pulled up behind the suspect he refused to cooperate with their orders to get out of the car. Suddenly the suspect got out of the car and began fighting the deputies. As they tried to subdue him, one of the deputies swept the suspect's waistband area and felt what was believed to be a weapon. At that time a deputy-involved shooting occurred.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire Rescue personnel. One of the deputies who was struck in the face by the suspect was treated at the scene for bruises.
A handgun was recovered from the suspect.
