City of Maywood benefits from Sheriff's Collision Reduction and Traffic Enforcement Program grant

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motor vehicle crashes killed 41,821 individuals and injured 3,189,000 others in 6.4 million crashes in 2005. Driver inattention, vehicle speeds, alcohol impairment, perceptual errors, and decision errors, are the leading factors in most crashes and near-crashes.
Through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway traffic safety Administration, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Traffic Services Bureau participated in a traffic operation to cite and/or arrest drivers of motor vehicles who are driving in violation of any section of the California’s Vehicle Code that is considered a Primary Causal Factor violation.
All 42 cities that contract with the Sheriff’s Department will benefit from the grants special operations through our Traffic Services Bureau. To date, the cities of Pico Rivera, Compton, Lynwood, Norwalk, Lakewood, Santa Clarita, Palmdale, Lancaster, Commerce and Bellflower have participated in the special operation.
On June 27, 2011, the special Primary Causal Factor special patrol was in the City of Maywood which resulted in the following:
66 Total Citations were written during a 5 hour enforcement period.
13 of the total citations were issued to Maywood residents. (19.7% of drivers cited)
48 of the total drivers cited live outside Maywood (72.7% of drivers cited)
2 Maywood residents had their cars Impounded due to being unlicensed drivers. (3% of drivers cited)
3 Los Angeles residents had their cars Impounded due to being unlicensed drivers.
2 Huntington Park residents had their cars Impounded for driving with their driving privilege suspended by DMV.
The results of the operation will be presented to the public at the next city council meeting, which will be on July 11, 2011, 6:00 p.m., City Hall, 4319 East Slauson Avenue, Maywood.
