A month-long Sheriff’s Department STAR Camp for over 50 La Puente students was held at Bassett High School during the month of July.
The Success Through Awareness and Resistance (STAR) Unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department coordinated the camp, and according to parents and their children, it was a huge success.
The students were kept busy each day with activities such as drug prevention, life skills, and geography lessons, games, swimming, nature hikes, bowling, and field trips to Riley’s Farm and Splash Water Park. This camp fills up quickly each year and there is commonly a long waiting list of students hoping for a spot to open up after the sign-ups are concluded.
The STAR Unit is dedicated to educating students throughout Los Angeles County about life skills and the dangers of drug use and gang affiliation. The deputies assigned to the STAR Unit currently teach approximately 40,000 students in over 200 schools throughout the County. The Star Camp is a continuation of these efforts during the summer.
The cost of the camp is financed through community donations to the STAR program and a grant from the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services -- Alcohol and Drug Program Administration (ADPA).
