New Software Helps Clear Jewelry Theft Case

The Tyrone PD received a donation from J.P. Baker Construction, a local business, in the amount of $2002.00 in February 2011 to cover the 1st year licensing costs of an investigative tool called Leads Online, which connects law enforcement agencies to pawn shops, scrap yards, and second hand stores across the country. Detectives use the software to research persons of interest in theft cases and items that have been reported stolen and it provides us with details if these suspects have pawned any items or if any items entered as stolen are pawned at participating pawn shops.

We have had little success with the software up until now, but that changed last week when a citizen called to report that she suspected a family member of stealing several items - mostly jewelry - from her home little by little over the past two months. The suspect's name was entered into Leads Online and it immediately returned "hits" showing that the suspect had, in fact, sold the items that the victim described to our local gold buyer and that she had pawned another item in Dekalb County. The value of the stolen items totaled $17,975.

A warrant was issued and the offender has been arrested for Felony Theft by Taking.

As a note to our citizens, our success with Leads Online relies on good descriptions, serial numbers, and model numbers on stolen items and a large majority of our theft victims cannot provide this information to us when reporting a crime. Consequently, we highly recommend using "Report It", which is a free service provided by Leads Online to all of its client jurisdictions. This free online software helps citizens record serial numbers, model numbers, descriptions, and photos of their valuable items and store them in a secure online database so that the information can be accessed in the event you become a victim of a crime or a disaster - it's perfect for insurance reporting if your home is ever damaged by fire or a natural disaster.
