Back Pack Bandit Identified and Arrest Warrant Issued
LAPD Detectives announced the criminal filing of robbery charges against Adan Peralta, 25, of Mexico. A warrant was issued for his arrest.
Following two similar robberies of elderly women in Little Tokyo, police released video footage showing a short man with a back pack snatching chains from the women's necks.
A tipster reported to detectives about hearing Peralta and his brother bragging about committing the robberies. Patrol officers found Peralta walking in Little Tokyo soon after and arrested him.
Initially, detectives were unable to get a filing for the robbery as the victim was blind and unable to identify her assailant.
"We were pretty convinced we had the Back Pack bandit anyway," said Lt. Paul Vernon, commanding officer of the Central Detective Division. "Aside from bragging about doing the robberies, Peralta had scratches on his arms which were consistent with the victim fighting back during the robbery."
Unable to get a filing, detectives notified ICE, who took custody of Peralta and deported him to Mexico. Peralta had been arrested and deported multiple times in the past, the last time being in April 2011.
Since the deportation, detectives found a witness who was able to identify Peralta out of photo line-up, which led to the criminal filing.
As Peralta had been deported, the District Attorney's Office issued an arrest warrant for robbery, with bail set at $105,000.
"Peralta seems to always land back in the downtown area," Lt. Vernon said. "Every officer has a flyer with his face on it, and we'll be ready if he returns."
