ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Transit Services Bureau (TSB), along with American Heroes Benefit Group, Inc., will host their 2nd annual motorcycle ride and car show to benefit heroes who have left us and those “still in the fight”. This year’s ride will honor one of their own, Sheriff’s Sergeant Robert “R.J.” Anderson. (pictured) Anderson is a 20+ year veteran of the department, and a former Transit Services Bureau deputy. R.J., as he is known to his friends, was diagnosed with ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, early this year.
Sheriff’s Sergeant Klaus Girmes, President of American Heroes Benefit Group, Inc. (AHBG, Inc.), the non-profit California corporation co-sponsoring the event, has known R.J. since they were partners at Lomita Sheriff’s Station in 1997. “Oddly enough, he ended up marrying my training officer.” Reminisced Girmes. Anderson, who lives with his wife, daughter, and step-daughter, is currently fighting to survive with the disease that has claimed the lives of several family members. “I’ve always known R.J. to be a happy and healthy person that took good care of himself. I know that there’s no cure for ALS, but if he’s still fighting, so will we until we find a cure.” said Girmes.
AHBG, Inc., the group Co-founded and headed up by Girmes, seeks to assist fallen police, fire, military personnel and their families, with monetary or other assistance, when these heroes become critically injured, ill, disabled, or all too often, make the ultimate sacrifice. “Even though we’ve only been around since 2010, we’ve already been able to help seven of our “family members”, including R.J.” said Girmes. “We’re really looking forward to a great turnout at this year’s ride, so that we can continue to help those who put their lives on the line for all of us.”
The benefit ride will start at Pomona Valley Harley Davidson, with registration beginning at 8:30 in the morning. Girmes says that the 17 mile procession will leave at about 11:00 A.M., and should arrive at their destination at about 11:30 A.M.. The ride destination, Nick’s Taste of Texas Restaurant, will also host a car show, food and drinks, opportunity drawing, and live entertainment by the “MO50”. Registration for the ride includes a catered lunch, and the first 150 registrants will receive a limited edition 2011 TSB Benefit Ride and Car Show lapel pin. Festivities will run for most of the day.
Start: Pomona Valley Harley Davidson, 8710 Central Ave., Montclair, 91763
Finish: Nick’s Taste of Texas Restaurant, 545 N. Citrus Ave., Covina, 91723
Those interested in participating in the ride, or just attending the car show should visit the AHBG website at:

Staff members are also available via a toll free number: 888-349-6041. If you are unable to make the ride, you are encouraged to visit the website and make a donation. Your donation may be tax- deductible up to the amount allowed by law.
In a statement made earlier this year, Sergeant R.J. Anderson reminded all of us, “Awareness is the answer, as well as the funding. Most importantly, knowledge of this dreadful disease and it's effect on family members. I ask that we all get involved and help change the faces of the victims of this disease.”
