Police officer killed in motorcycle crash
A San Antonio police officer died Wednesday night after a motorcycle crash in the Live Oak area, authorities said.
Shawn McGibbons, 42, died about 10:26 p.m. after he lost control of his motorcycle on the 14200 block of North Loop 1604 East and struck a support beam for an overhead highway sign, Live Oak Police Sgt. Anita Seamans said.
McGibbons, an 18-year veteran of the San Antonio Police Department, was off-duty, Seamans said. He was not wearing a helmet, Seamans said.
“Most of the officers working the wreck knew him,” she said. “That makes it tough.”
Police Chief William McManus said in an emailed statement that he learned of the death “with great sadness.”
“This is tragic both for the family and the San Antonio Police Department,” McManus said.
