Remington Police Conduct Traffic Safety Checkpoint for
Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Crackdown 2011

Remington, VA – The national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over crackdown that launched on August 19 includes the use of sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols, especially during high-risk nighttime hours.

Remington Police conducted two Checkpoints on Saturday September 3, 2011 in support of the national crackdown. The first checkpoint was set up at the intersection of N. Franklin St. and Remington Rd. The Second checkpoint was then set up at the intersection of E. Main St. and N. Franklin St.

A total of fifteen charges were issued. These included a DUI, 2 Driving on Suspended charges, No Operators License, Attempt to elude Police, and Possession of Alcohol while Driving. In addition to our local charges, an arrest was also made for 5 Outstanding Felony Warrants and one Fail to Appear misdemeanor warrant from neighboring jurisdictions.

“The crackdown campaign ran through the Labor Day weekend and Remington Police were out in full force to help get more impaired drivers off local roadways,” said Acting Chief Charles Proffitt.

Driving with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 grams per deciliter or higher is illegal in all 50 states. Yet in 2009 alone, 10,839 people were killed in U.S. motor vehicle crashes that involved drivers or motorcycle riders with BACs of .08 g/dL or higher, according to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“It’s clear that too many people still don’t understand that impaired driving is no accident — nor is it a victimless crime,” said Acting Chief Proffitt. “So our message to motorists is simple and unwavering: if you get caught driving while impaired, you will be arrested. No exceptions.”
