Investigators said 44-year-old Darren Cole confronted the officers upon their arrival at the home.
According to police, Cole hit Officer Howell with a large stick. When he raised the stick again, investigators said Officer Humphrey shot him.
"Officers encountered aggressive actions by the subject which put the officers in fear. Officers did shoot the subject," said Lt. Jeremy Alsup with Columbia Police.
Police said Cole was taken to Maury Regional Medical Center, but he did not survive. Howell was taken to the hospital as well with minor injuries, but she is expected to make a full recovery.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has now been called in take the lead in this investigation: standard procedure during officer-involved shootings. Howell and Humphrey have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
