HALLOWEEN
Inside the Marengo Police Department

Joseph M. Hallman
As Halloween approaches, I offer the following advice as far as trick-or-treating is concerned:
A parent or responsible adult should accompany children when making the rounds
Be sure masks have holes which provide a large field of vision
Use a flashlight after dark
Discuss appropriate behavior while engaged in trick-or-treating
Travel in groups
Make sure costumes have reflective markings
Be sure costumes are flame resistant
Make sure costumes don’t present any tripping hazards
Stay within familiar neighborhoods
Avoid crossing in between parked vehicles
Approach only houses that are lighted
Never enter a stranger’s home for treats
Be polite after receiving treats
Do not vandalize houses where no one appears home
Be cautious around animals, even your own pets that may not recognize you in a costume
Be sure children have access to or are in possession of a working / charged cell phone
Plan your route and make sure others are aware of your route
Always observe safe practices near traffic and use cross-walks or corners
Adults should inspect treats before consumption
The observed hours of trick-or-treating will be from 4 pm until 7 pm on Halloween night
By employing these common sense practices everyone can have an enjoyable and safe time during Halloween. Hours are from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Let’s have a safe and happy Halloween!
