Flu Facts
The flu is a contagious respiratory that affects the nose, throat, and lungs and can cause mild to severe illness. Most individuals who’ve had it can very easily recall how miserable it made them feel.
Flu is spread mainly via droplets when people talk, sneeze or cough. However, it can also spread when someone touches a surface that has flu virus on it and then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth. Here are some tips to safeguarding yourself:
Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue – or sneeze into your elbow.
Wash hands frequently for at least 20 seconds – or use hand sanitizer.
Disinfect commonly shared items – toys, remote controls, doorknobs.
Get a flu shot.
The Bloomfield Department of Health & Human Services still has flu vaccine available. Call the Office of Public Health Nursing at 973.680.4058 to come in for a shot. It’s free with Medicare (Part B) and only a nominal fee for self-payers. It’s available for those 18 years and older. Please call with any questions.
