Wrong-way driver was drinking before he hit, killed detective

A Doraville police officer was responding to a home invasion call when he died in a head-on collision caused by a driver going the wrong way on I-20 in DeKalb County.

Police now say the accused wrong-way driver may have been drinking before the predawn collision Monday that killed Det. Robert Shane Wilson.

It’s “an extremely emotional day” at the department, Doraville police spokesman Mr. Gene Callaway said.

About 1:50 a.m. Doraville police received a call of a home invasion in progress, Mr. Callaway said.

Officers arrived at the scene promptly and took one suspect into custody, but a second suspect ran from the scene, Officer Callaway said.

Det. Wilson was responding to the home invasion when the crash happened.

The detective was heading westbound on I-20 in a Ford Edge when he was struck head-on by another vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound lane, DeKalb County police spokeswoman Ms. Mekka Parish said.

DeKalb County police identified the wrong-way driver as Mr. Gene Jones, 39, of Dunwoody. He was driving a jeep when he hit the officer in the collision, Ms. Parish said.
