Recent Academy Graduate & Aspiring Sheriff's Deputy Killed

Miguel Angel Alonzo III, 24, died at University Hospital after he was hit in a north side parking lot, according to police.

It happened near Bitters and West Avenue early Sunday morning. The cause of the incident is under investigation.

Alonzo is a recent graduate of the Alamo Area Regional Law Enforcement Academy. His stepfather, Javier Martinez, says his son always dreamed of being a part of law enforcement, "He just graduated from the academy, he wanted to be a Comal Sheriff."

Alonzo's friend says that Alonzo waited in a vehicle for his to friends to leave a nightclub because he couldn't get in. His friend says Alonzo forgot his license at home.. so Alonzo waited for them.

According to the police report, Alonzo later saw his friend get clipped by a driver in an SUV. Witnesses say Alonzo got out of the vehicle to stop the driver and that's when the driver ran over him.

The motive right now is unclear, but police say an argument between Alonzo's friend and the driver may have had something to do with it.

Crimestoppers is offering a reward of up to $5,000.00 for information that leads to an arrest.
