Atchison policeman killed in apparent murder-suicide
ATCHISON, Kan. — Police have confirmed an Atchison police officer and his alleged shooter are dead following a shooting incident late Friday afternoon.
Sgt. David Enzbrenner was shot while serving a nuisance order to a house on 12th and Division streets shortly before 4 p.m., said Atchison County Sheriff John Calhoon. He said the alleged shooter, Skyler Barbee, 25, came "out of nowhere," fired at the officer and then turned the gun on himself.
Mr. Enzbrenner, a 24-year veteran of the Atchison City Police Department, as well as a husband and father of two girls, was transported by air ambulance to University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City from the scene. The body of Mr. Barbee remained in the street after the shooting.
It was unclear whether Mr. Barbee was a resident of the home where the nuisance order was being served, Mr. Calhoon said.
Stephani Slatten, who lives in the area, told the Atchison Globe she saw the aftermath of the shooting scene and described it as “chaos.” She said local police and medical/rescue personnel were on the scene, including a helicopter ambulance.
Mr. Calhoon said the investigation into the shooting is ongoing, as a number of eyewitnesses have yet to be interviewed. More information about the incident is expected to be released later this evening.
“We're getting a tremendous amount of support from other law enforcement agencies. It's very critical we give support to the victims' family and we ask for everyone's prayers and support," Mr. Calhoon said. “It's not something that happens in Atchison, Kansas often at all and it's very unfortunate.”
Reporters from the St. Joseph News-Press and Atchison Globe are on the scene.
