Illegal Panga Boats Coming Ashore On Catalina Island
Thursday, December 19, 2011
Human and drug trafficking has taken to the seas. Fishing style boats known as Panga’s have entered U.S. waters from Mexico in very dangerous conditions. These vessels are operated by smugglers paid to transport illegal immigrants or narcotics, or both to the United States. Dangerous sea conditions have forced smugglers to seek shelter in the many secluded coves on Catalina Island. Panga boats are very noticeable as their style is somewhat distinctive. These vessels are open with no cabin structure and can measure up to 40 feet in length. Since the fuel capacity of these vessels is limited, smugglers have compensated by integrating portable fuel canisters to their supply to make their journey.
If you see a vessel of this type in Catalina Island waters or on one of the beaches, particularly with large groups of people, we encourage you to call Avalon Sheriff’s Station at (310) 510-0174 or 911 if you have phone service or contact the U.S. Coast Guard on marine VHF channel 16.
