The Avalon Sheriff's Station Youth Activities League (YAL)
December 22, 2011
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Sheriff's Youth Foundation was created in 1985 based upon the belief that crime prevention programs focused on youth are the key to developing safer communities. Through its programs, the foundation works with the young people throughout Los Angeles County to provide them with tools for life success, and empowers them to utilize these tools while also having fun.
The Sheriff’s Youth Activities League, (YAL) under the Sheriff’s Youth Foundation is a youth crime prevention program that relies on educational, athletic and other recreational activities to cement a bond between law enforcement and the youth in our communities. The YAL program is based on the conviction that young person’s reached early enough can develop positive attitudes in their journey through life toward the goal of maturity and good citizenship. The YAL programs exist to offer local youth a safe, supportive place where they can interact with positive role models.
The Avalon YAL has been in existence since 2004 and has offered numerous types of programs to Avalon’s youth including afterschool sports programs, nutrition programs, fencing, judo, and other martial arts. Currently, the Avalon Sheriff's Station YAL offers a Kenpo karate program. In 2012 the YAL will also offer a Teen CERT program and a safe boating program for middle school and high school students.
