Community

Crime Prevention In The City Of Avalon

December 27, 2011

"The police are the public and the public are the police; the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence." Statement by Sir Robert Peel. Sir Peel is known as the "Father of the modern concept of law enforcement." In 1829 as the British Home Secretary, Sir Peel formed the London based Metropolitan Police Force.

A safe community is born when the community looks out for itself. Everyone should make sure that their windows and doors are locked before leaving their house or business. If you create a hard target for criminals, you can impact the amount of crime that occurs.

If we see someone suspicious in a place where they don't appear to belong, call the Sheriff's Department right away either by 911 or the business line at (310) 510-0174. Do not try to stop a suspicious person, but take down a good description and watch where that person goes. The best help you can be if a crime occurs, is a good witness. If you see something, say something.

Take pride in Avalon and help keep our community safe. If you have any questions regarding community crime prevention, contact Avalon Sheriff's Station Deputy Burt Lyon at (310) 510-0174.
