UPDATE on arrest of assault suspect in civic center

UPDATE: Jermaine Moran Arrested for Assault Spree

Los Angeles. Los Angeles police officers arrested Jermaine Moran near Main and Temple Streets, just after 7 AM.

“It didn’t take long to find Mr. Moran, and he was within a block of where all of the previous attacks occurred,” said Lt. Paul Vernon, head of detectives for the Central Police Station. “We booked him on outstanding warrants as the battery cases against him continue to be investigated.”

All the attacks Moran is suspected of committing are misdemeanor batteries and state law precludes officers from making such arrests unless they witness the crime.

“These are the types of crimes where private person arrests are often made,” Lt. Vernon explained. “But outside of that, detectives have to get a warrant before a person can be arrested for a misdemeanor.”

In Moran’s case, police arrested him on existing warrants, while detectives prepare the five battery cases for presentation to the city attorney. “Given Moran’s pattern of attacks, the city attorney will give this case immediate consideration. I expect they will file the new charges quickly,” Lt. Vernon added. “It’s a clear matter of protecting the community.”
