During the past several days, the Thurmont Police Department has taken reports of scams occurring in our area. At this time the variety of scams reported are: 1) potential victim receives a call and is informed that they just won a large sum of money. The caller then instructs the victim to send a money card in the amount of $1,000 to secure their winnings. 2) A family receives a call in which the caller informs them that a family member has been kidnapped. The victim is instructed to send $3,000 for their family member’s release. 3) A caller informs the victim that a family member has been incarcerated in another country. The victim is instructed to send $3,000 to have their family member released. Anyone experiencing a suspicious call whereas they are told that they have won money or are instructed to send money should contact the Thurmont Police Department and report the fraud immediately.
