Advisory

FLOOD WATCH NOW IN EFFECT THROUGH MONDAY EVENING

PORTIONS OF CENTRAL IDAHO AND SOUTHEAST IDAHO - INCLUDING THE CITY OF MONTPELIER

* THROUGH MONDAY EVENING

* STRONGLY INCREASING TEMPERATURES THIS WEEKEND WILL CAUSE SNOW TO MELT. HOWEVER - FROZEN GROUND WILL NOT ALLOW ANY ABSORPTION BY THE SOIL. ON SUNDAY NIGHT - RAIN ON TOP OF THE SNOW WILL INCREASE THE MELTING RATE EVEN MORE. THE RAIN AND MELTED SNOW WILL HAVE NO OPTION BUT TO DRAIN INTO LOW LYING AREAS.

* THIS SURFACE RUN OFF COULD POTENTIALLY FLOOD INTO HOMES AND OVER ROADWAYS STARTING THIS AFTERNOON. THE WATER WILL EVENTUALLY DRAIN INTO LOCAL CREEKS AND RIVERS - LEADING TO SURGES IN THEIR LEVELS. DRAINAGE SYSTEMS SUCH AS CANALS AND STORM DRAINS - IF NOT PROPERLY CLEARED OF DEBRIS THAT HAS BUILT UP DURING THE WINTER - MAY BACK UP AND CAUSE UNEXPECTED INUNDATION OF PROPERTY.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS -

A FLOOD WATCH MEANS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR FLOODING BASED ON CURRENT FORECASTS.

YOU SHOULD MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND BE ALERT FOR POSSIBLE FLOOD WARNINGS. THOSE LIVING IN AREAS PRONE TO FLOODING SHOULD BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION SHOULD FLOODING DEVELOP.

PERSONS LIVING ALONG CANALS AND IN URBAN AREAS SHOULD MAKE SURE THAT THE DRAINAGE IS CLEARED OF DEBRIS THAT HAS BEEN DEPOSITED DURING THE WINTER MONTHS.
