Off-duty police officer killed in fatal wreck near downtown
An off-duty veteran Metro police officer died Tuesday afternoon following a wreck near downtown.
Police have confirmed that Dustin Maynard, 28, a three-year veteran of the department died after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a truck at the intersection of Fourth Avenue South and Lafayette Street.
Maynard, who was assigned to the Hermitage Precinct’s overnight shift Flex Unit, died shortly after arriving at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
According to police, Maynard was riding his motorcycle toward downtown on Lafayette Street when he lost control at the intersection, ran a red light and collided with a pickup truck driven by Eric G. Cooper, 42, of Old Hickory. Cooper was not injured.
“By all accounts, Officer Maynard was a well-liked, conscientious officer who proudly served Nashville’s citizens,” Chief Steve Anderson said. “This is a sad afternoon for the men and women assigned to the Hermitage Precinct and the police department as a whole.”
