Fire Safety Equipment Scam on Businesses in Pennsylvania
Businesses in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, and Michigan have fallen victim to a scam involving the inspection of fire safety equipment. Typically, the suspect enters an establishment and falsely claims to be a representative of a fire prevention entity and requests to inspect fire extinguishers and/or alarms. After completing the “inspection”, the suspect demands to be paid in cash. These incidents have occurred at various types of businesses including restaurants, bakeries, ice cream parlors, and nail salons. The businesses have been charged $200.00-$480.00 by the scamers.
