Media Release

April 11, 2012

Early Tuesday morning, April 10, 2012, Officer Stanley of the Thurmont Police Department responded to the Liberty Gas Station located at 227 N. Church St. for a burglary and theft. Upon the officer’s arrival, an employee of the business showed the officer that the glass door to the business had been completely broken out and merchandise had been stolen. Through further investigation, it was learned that the suspect(s) entered through the broken glass door and stole over three hundred packs of potpourri incense also known as synthetic marijuana. These individual packs sell for $35 to $55 each and are not for human ingestion. However, these products are being sought by individuals to inhale the smoke or vapors to achieve a high similar to other controlled dangerous substances. These products, although legal, have produced dangerous health effects on persons who have inhaled the smoke or vapors. Numerous reports of overdose reactions have been reported throughout the state of Maryland. The brand names of the stolen packs are: “Kush,” “Mindwave,” “Spicy Green,” and “Cloud 9”. Anyone with information about this crime is encouraged to contact the Thurmont Police Department.
