Wildfire Awareness Week May 6-12

Folsom – With wildfire season around the corner California fire agencies statewide have declared May 6-12 as “Wildfire Awareness Week”. The 2012 theme throughout California is to reinforce the recommendations of the nationwide fire preparedness campaign “Ready-Set-Go”. In conjunction with this weeklong statewide effort the Folsom Fire Safe Council and City of Folsom Fire Department urge local homeowners to take the necessary steps to prepare their families and their homes from the risk of wildfires here in the City.

The key points of this program include:

• Ready – Preparing for the Fire Threat: Be Ready, Be Firewise. Take personal responsibility and prepare long before the threat of a wildfire so your home is ready in case of a fire. Create defensible space by clearing brush away from your home. Use fire-resistant landscaping and harden your home with fire-safe construction measures. Assemble emergency supplies and belongings in a safe spot. Make sure all residents residing within the home are on the same page, plan escape routes. For more information about how to be Ready for wildland fires, go to Firewise.org

• Set – Situational Awareness When a Fire Starts: Pack your vehicle with your emergency items. Stay aware of the latest news from local media and your local fire department for updated information on the fire.

• Go – Leave early! Following your Action Plan makes you prepared and firefighters are now able to best maneuver the wildfire and ensuring you and your family’s safety.

Thanks to funding provided by the Folsom Firefighters Association the City has educational brochures available for homeowners that describe the Ready-Set-Go program and offers numerous suggestions on how they can prepare their homes and families. Interested persons can also go to the program website, http://www.wildlandfirersg.org/ for additional tips and information on how homeowners can make their home more resistant to wildfires.
