The Nederland – Mid County area is experiencing a higher than normal volume of counterfeit money being passed at local businesses. I want to pass this information on to the public so they can be aware of the counterfeit money in circulation and not fall victim to yet another scam. The counterfeit money that we are seeing is $50.00 bills and $100.00 bills. The person or persons making the counterfeit money is actually bleaching a $5.00 bill and copying / scanning either a $50.00 or $100.00 onto the $5.00 bill. As you look at the counterfeit money its darker in color and slightly smaller due to the money shrinking during the bleaching process. The counterfeit detector pen shows that the paper is good so you can’t use that alone to determine whether or not the money is counterfeit. If you look at the security thread and hold it up to the light you will notice that it says USA FIVE instead of USA 50 or USA 100. The water mark located on the right side of the bill if you look closely you will see that it’s distorted and that its actually an image of President Lincoln instead of President Grant who appears on a $50 or Benjamin Franklin who appears on a $100.
