FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Montpelier, ID – The “Click it or Ticket” safety restraint enforcement campaign will begin on May 22, 2012 and end on June 5, 2012. The Montpelier Police Department is teaming with the Idaho Transportation Department and other law enforcement agencies to support the nationwide highway safety goal of reducing motor vehicle related deaths and serious injuries by increasing the use of seat belts and child safety seats.
From January 1, 2012 to March 31, 2012, there were 37 motor vehicle related deaths in Idaho. Of those 37 deaths, 34 were passenger vehicle occupants. Of those occupants, 59% were not using safety restraints. According to research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seatbelts are 50% effective in eliminating fatalities in a crash. By that estimation, there would have been 22 less fatalities from January through March of this year on Idaho's roads had everyone buckled up.
The Montpelier Police Department will be out in full force May 22 through June 5th. Our efforts will be geared toward seat belt and child safety restraint enforcement. Your officers will have a zero tolerance for safety restraint violations. “Use your seatbelts and child safety seats,” Lt. Blake Wells said, “Don’t become one of the statistics.”
