Chula Vista Swimming Pool / Water Safety Information.

The Chula Vista Fire and Recreation Departments want to remind residents of the dangers of backyard and community swimming pools. Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1-4. Most drownings occur in residential pools. Nearly half of the victims were last seen in the house and had been missing for less than five minutes.

Drowning is preventable: homeowners should install fencing and alarms around pools and lock doors to prevent unauthorized access. Children should learn to swim at an early age and should never be left unattended near a pool. An adult “water watcher” should supervise children when they are swimming. Be prepared for a drowning: learn CPR and have a phone nearby to call 911 if necessary. If a child is missing, always look in the pool area first.
