We would like to issue a warning regarding an inter-state fraud ring that is in the area and has victimized residents in the cities of Harper Woods, Grosse Pointe Park, Detroit and Troy. The "gypsy scam" artists are posing as water dept. workers or roofers. They are telling residents that they are working in the area and need the resident to come with them into the basement to fill a bucket with hot water. While distracted by one person, a second person ransacks the home. They will also attempt to distract the homeowner in the garage. They act very friendly as if they know you.
They have been seen driving a black sedan and there are usually 2 heavyset white males, however, a black male has also been involved. The subjects never possess or produce the proper identification.
Be aware, utility workers will be in a marked vehicle and have the proper employee identification. If you are suspicious or unsure of the identity of someone in your area, call the utility to see if they are working in the area or call the police. Do not let strangers in your home.
