Los Angeles. Police are investigating an early-morning shooting that occurred in the 600 block of Maple Street. One man was shot in the leg and another critically in the chest after an argument broke out among a group of about a half-dozen transients.
"We have not determined the exact motive for the argument or the shooting," said Lt. Paul Vernon, commanding officer of detectives for the Central Police Station. "All we really have to go on is a 'male black,' who was among the group and just opened fire."
Police interviewed a number of witnesses, including some people who were waiting at a nearby bus depot when the shooting took place, around 2:10 AM, June 3, 2012. The suspect's description remained only general: Male, Black, medium build, about 6 feet tall, wearing dark clothing.
Witnesses and the victims were uncooperative or appeared evasive with police.
Paramedics rushed both wounded men to the hospital. The man shot in the chest was undergoing surgery and was listed in critical condition. The man shot in the leg was noted in stable condition.
"We're encouraging anyone with information to come forward and tell us what happened," Lt. Vernon said. "One of the best ways for the residents of skidrow to protect themselves is to turn over any information about anyone with a gun."
