A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for Screven County until 9:00 P.M.
The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a
Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of
far southeast Alabama
northern Florida
central and southern Georgia
far southern South Carolina
coastal waters
Effective this Tuesday afternoon and evening from 1225 PM until
900 PM EDT.
Hail to 2 inches in diameter... thunderstorm wind gusts to 70
mph... and dangerous lightning are possible in these areas.
The Severe Thunderstorm Watch area is approximately along and 75
statute miles either side of a line from 20 miles east of
Brunswick Georgia to 45 miles north of Marianna Florida. For a
complete depiction of the watch see the associated watch outline
update (wous64 kwns wou8).
Remember... a Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are
favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch
area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for
threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements
and possible warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally
do produce tornadoes.
Discussion... tstms are expected to increase in coverage and
intensity this afternoon along and ahead of cold front settling swd
through the region. Modification of 12z observed soundings with
current surface conditions suggests that air mass is already
moderately unstable /I.E. MLCAPE of 1000-2000 j per kg/ with little
or no convective inhibition. When coupled with 30-40 kt of deep
wnwly shear... setup will favor the development of supercells and
bowing structures capable of damaging winds and large hail.
Aviation... a few severe thunderstorms with hail surface and aloft
to 2 inches. Extreme turbulence and surface wind gusts to 60
knots. A few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to 500. Mean storm
motion vector 29035.
