PLEASE BE AWARE that the intersection of Sweetgum St and Lucas St is now a 4-way stop.

Please be advised that due to the high amount of vehicle traffic utilizing Sweetgum Street as a thoroughfare from Oliver Hwy to Savannah Hwy, we have designated the intersection of Sweetgum and Lucas Streets as a 4-way stopping point.

Sweetgum Street is a residential street and the added thru traffic is generating complaints of high traffic flow and speeding. We feel designating this intersection as a 4-way stopping point will work in favor of reducing speed violations which is a high priority safety concern in that area with foot traffic along a street without sidewalks available and the number of children that live along that street.

The Police Department WILL NOT be issuing citations for stop sign violations at that intersection for at least 30 days to allow time for motorist to adjust to the new stopping point. We will make the new stopping point highly visible as to attract motorist attention to the new signage. However, the Police Department will be stopping violators that run the signs and issuing courtesy warnings to make drivers aware of the new stopping point.
