CPR Impacts Outcome of 3 Year Old Near Drowning

Maricopa, ARIZ June 16th 2012

Maricopa Fire Department crews responded Saturday afternoon for reports of a drowning at the community pool at Desert Passage subdivision. Initial reports indicated that CPR was performed on 3 year old female who was pulled from the pool by a family member.

When crews arrived on scene they found the patient conscious, breathing, and being held by a family member near the water’s edge. Crew members, along with members of the Maricopa Police Department, worked quickly to assess the patient and gather all information regarding circumstances of the incident. According to bystanders patient was last seen between 3-10 minutes before being found floating face down. Her 14 year old cousin removed her from the pool and immediately began rendering CPR while another family member called 911.Examination revealed patient was breathing and alert and responding to questions. Patient was transported to Cardon’s Children’s Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment as a precaution. At the time of this release patient is doing well and undergoing testing at the hospital.

As we get into the heat of our Arizona summer, drowning incidents become more and more a reality. Fortunately, in this instance, a family member trained in CPR was able to administer care as soon as possible drastically altering the outcome of this event. Maricopa Fire Department would like to remind all citizens about the Watch Your Kids Around Water campaign which stresses the importance of constant adult supervision when children are around water. We would also strongly encourage all citizens to get CPR certified as an effort to increase community assistance when emergency situations arise. As the outcome of this incident illustrates the knowledge and abilities learned through CPR training may save the life of someone you love.
