SPOKANE, Wash. -
Two Spokane County Sheriff's deputies were shot in North Spokane Tuesday afternoon. One was said to be "doing okay", while the other was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Separate reports confirmed heavy police activity in Deer Park at Hwy. 395 and Crawford that may be related to the shooting in Spokane.

The shooting happened around 4:15 near the Northpointe shopping area on the Newport Highway. Red police tape could be seen in the area across the street from the Olive Garden restaurant. A spokesman said both deputies were taken to the hospital in critical condition as various law enforcement agencies worked to locate the suspect.

Police believe the suspect, described as a man in his 40s in a brown shirt, fled the scene and may have hijacked another vehicle to get away. He may have been wearing a hat and a wig. A blue SUV could be seen near the scene of the shooting with its back window either knocked out or shot out.

Police sped northward around 5:15 after hearing reports the suspect may have been spotted on the Newport Highway in the area of Elk-Chattaroy Road.

As a result of all the police activity in the area, the nearby YMCA was placed on lockdown.
