URGENT - WEATHER MESSAGE

...A PERIOD OF EARLY SEASON DANGEROUS HEAT WILL IMPACT OUR
REGION...
.A STRENGTHENING AREA OF HIGH PRESSURE WILL BUILD INTO OUR REGION
TODAY AND THURSDAY...BRINGING A VERY HOT AIRMASS WITH NEAR RECORD
HIGH TEMPERATURES. THIS WILL ALSO BE ACCOMPANIED BY INCREASING
HUMIDITY LEVELS. THE COMBINATION OF THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY WILL
RESULT IN DANGEROUS CONDITIONS DURING THE AFTERNOON AND EARLY
EVENING HOURS. THE URBAN CENTERS SUCH AS CENTER CITY PHILADELPHIA
WILL TEND TO HOLD THE HEAT THROUGH THE NIGHT THAT BUILT UP DURING
THE DAY. RELIEF FROM THE HEAT WILL GRADUALLY ARRIVE FROM THE
NORTHWEST DURING FRIDAY INTO SATURDAY.

* HEAT INDEX VALUES...BETWEEN 98 AND 102 DEGREES THIS AFTERNOON
AND THURSDAY AFTERNOON.
* TEMPERATURES...IN THE MID TO UPPER 90S THIS AFTERNOON AND
THURSDAY AFTERNOON.
* IMPACTS...THE WORST WOULD BE FELT BY THOSE WHO LIVE AND/OR
WORK IN THE MORE URBAN AREAS AND AWAY FROM THE IMMEDIATE
COAST. THOSE WHO ARE AT A GREATER RISK INCLUDE THE ELDERLY...
THE INFIRM AND CHILDREN.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A HEAT ADVISORY MEANS THAT A PERIOD OF HOT TEMPERATURES IS
EXPECTED. THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY
WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE
POSSIBLE. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS... STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED
ROOM... STAY OUT OF THE SUN... AND CHECK UP ON RELATIVES AND
NEIGHBORS.
TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS IF YOU WORK OR SPEND TIME OUTSIDE. WHEN
POSSIBLE... RESCHEDULE STRENUOUS ACTIVITY TO EARLY MORNING OR
EVENING. KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT
STROKE. WEAR LIGHT WEIGHT AND LOOSE FITTING CLOTHING WHEN
POSSIBLE AND DRINK PLENTY OF WATER.
TO REDUCE RISK DURING OUTDOOR WORK... THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND
HEALTH ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS SCHEDULING FREQUENT REST BREAKS
IN SHADED OR AIR CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENTS. ANYONE OVERCOME BY
HEAT SHOULD BE MOVED TO A COOL AND SHADED LOCATION. HEAT STROKE
IS AN EMERGENCY - CALL 9 1 1.
