FIREWORKS SAFETY
FIREWORKS SAFETY
Pyrotechnics, commonly known as fireworks, are explosives that provide spectacular displays of light, color and sound. For many people in the United States, fireworks play an important part in family celebrations and holidays. But because they are designed to burn and explode, fireworks are also a leading cause of injury.
Every year, approximately 9,300 people in the United States are treated for fireworks related injuries – including burns, lacerations, amputations and blindness. Children between the ages of 10 and 14 are at greatest risk of injury.
Typically, fireworks legal to each County in California are sold at legitimate Firework stands within that County. So basically, if it is not sold at a firework stand in your County, DO NOT purchase it.
The City of San Clemente does not allow fireworks as outlined in the city municipal code:
3301.2 Retail Fireworks. The storage, use, sale, possession, and handling of fireworks 1.4G (commonly referred to as Safe & Sane) and fireworks 1.3G is prohibited.
• Do not use illegal fireworks. Many fireworks have been made illegal based on safety or hazard issues.
• Read and follow directions on fireworks packages.
• Use fireworks outdoors only.
• Light fireworks away from any dry, grassy areas.
• If you light a firework fuse and the firework does not go off, do not immediately approach it. Wait at least 20 minutes, and then soak the firework in water.
• Do not ever use homemade or illegal fireworks: They can kill you!
• Use common sense. Spectators should keep a safe distance from fireworks.
• Only use fireworks as intended. Don't try to alter them or combine them.
• Make sure adults supervise the use of all fireworks.
• Never give young children fireworks. Adults should supervise the use of all fireworks.
• Store fireworks in a cool, dry place. Keep fireworks out of your pockets.
