From the Orange County Fire Authority, they want to remind you that the sale, discharge or possession of fireworks is illegal in most areas of Orange County. There are only five cities which permit “safe and sane” fireworks. These cities are: Buena Park, Costa Mesa, Santa Ana, Garden Grove, and Stanton. You must be over sixteen years of age to legally use fireworks.

Another reason for extra concern this season is due to it being extra dry. Fireworks cause approximately 3,000 fires per year in the United States. With this season being extra dry, the discharging of fireworks could ignite more fires than usual. Not only that but one risks possible eye injuries and burns.

Approximately 10,000 people suffer eye injuries and burns from fireworks each year in the United States. The Orange County Fire Authority recommends if you do get burned; cool the burn with water, not ice. Seek medical treatment or call 9-1-1. Please do not apply butter or ointments.

With the holiday week-end, there are always a lot more drivers on the road. Please be courteous and try to avoid “Road Rage.” Just by implementing some of the following recommendations made by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, you can make it safer for you, your family, other drivers and the officers on the road.

Focus on your driving (do not be distracted by cell phones, eating, hunting for items in your vehicle, etc.), please give officers room on the roadway, please move over if you see police or other emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the roadway and slow down, do not drive on the shoulder of a highway, watch officers’ hands as they direct traffic, only drive when sober, drive within the speed limit, keep the volume on your car radio at a reasonable level, don’t wear headphones while you drive, and report drunk drivers.
