A Message from the Chief…

December 2005, I accepted the position of Chief of Police. In doing so, I made the following statement, which is posted on our website:

As Chief of Police, I find myself heading a progressive and professional department. The department is made up of well-trained and dedicated members who are committed to serving and protecting the citizens of Thurmont. [This remains true today.]

The Thurmont Police Department is a community oriented and problem solving law enforcement agency. Our commitment to the philosophy of community policing and problem solving is an organizational strategy that encourages a working partnership between the police and citizens of the community. The relationship is built on a mutual trust and rests on the belief that citizens deserve input into the police process through citizen participation and support.

In furtherance to the statement – one of our goals was to expand and enhance our commitment to the philosophy of Community Oriented Policing and increase the Department’s capabilities in an effort to prevent and curtail crime.

Through strategic planning, community participation and support, and the performance of our dedicated staff, we have accomplished this goal, as well as, many others.

The following statistical data indicates we have all made an impact in reducing crime in our community:
• According to the Uniformed Crime Report (UCR) – data we submitted – Part 1 crimes decreased 10.2 % from 2010 to 2011.
• Actual Incidents Reported (Calls for Service) – decreased 4.0% from 2010 to 2011.
• Case Closure rates – 24% increase from 2010 – 2011.

In reference to illegal drug activity, the Department, with citizen participation, has been working aggressively and took a proactive approach to reduce and deter the use and sale of drugs. Knowing that it is impossible to stop it in its entirety, we have taken positive steps and have impinged upon the activity of involved persons.

The Thurmont Police has conducted Special Operations, surveillance, increased police visibility in identified areas, via walking patrols and marked vehicles, conducted community meetings, and had in-person contact with known drug suppliers. The approach has been effective. Our efforts will continue to effectively accomplish this task.

On behalf of the Thurmont Police Department, I would like to thank the citizens of our community, the police staff and the town staff, as well as, the Board of Commissioners for all their support in assisting to make their police department one of the best, and for making Thurmont a safe and secure community.

Sincerely,

Chief Gregory L. Eyler
