PRESS RELEASE: Car vs Child crash on East Market Street in Warsaw
At 8:30 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, July 18, 2012, Warsaw Police were called to the 700 block of East Market Street for a child that had been struck by a car. Upon arrival of emergency personnel, a seven (7) year old Warsaw girl was found semi-conscious lying in the road. Samaritan Helicopter was called to the scene and landed in Fribley Field where they transported the girl to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. The crash investigation found that a group of children had been at Dubois-Richardson Park and several children crossed Market Street, while several others stayed on the south side of the road. The seven year old girl then quickly darted across Market Street in front of an eastbound grey 2002 Honda Civic, driven by 62 year old, Linda J. Barbosa of Warsaw. The front of the Honda struck the child throwing her up on the hood of the car and then to the road. The child was identified by her parents as Mikala Watkins, of 509 E. Market Street, Warsaw. Mikala is in serious condition at Parkview Hospital suffering from head and side injuries. Kosciusko FACT investigators do not believe speed is a factor in this crash. They also found that alcohol and drug were not factors. Warsaw Police were assisted by Kosciusko County FACT, Warsaw Fire, Multi-Township EMS, and Parkview Samaritan Helicopter.
