USA Triathlon coming to South Burlington, Saturday, August 18, 2012 -see message for traffic delays and road closures
South Burlington is again host to much of the bike portion of the USA Triathlon. RunVermont has worked to reduce traffic interruptions and prepared a schedule that will involve shorter road closures than last year.
Below please find a copy of a letter prepared by RunVermont.
Greetings:
As fellow members of our Burlington and Vermont communities many of you are familiar with the special events that have become essential elements of our overall community fabric. Events like First Night, Mardi Gras, the Discover Jazz Festival, Maritime Festival, the KeyBank Vermont City Marathon, and all the others too numerous to mention, are all a part of our social tapestry that makes the experience of living in Vermont so unique.
This summer we will once again host the USA Triathlon National Championships from August 17-19. USA Triathlon is the national governing body for the Olympic sport of triathlon and the National Championships is the most important competition on their annual calendar.
Direct Impacts in South Burlington
Just as last year, a major portion of the event’s bike course will take place on Rte 189 eastbound, Dorset, Swift and Spear Sts. There will be road closures affecting these areas on Saturday, 8/18, starting at 8:00 and ending at approximately 11:30am. Specific closure schedules will be available at the following website: www.runvermont.org/usat.
Modifications have been made to the event schedule to help spread out the athletes in hopes of facilitating better opportunities to have vehicles cross the course at intersections. Peak bike traffic will occur on Spear, Irish Hill and Dorset Streets from approximately 9:15-10:45am. Anyone wishing to travel in this corridor should expect delays in reaching a desired destination during this time. If you live within the affected neighborhoods and need to travel to destinations outside this loop please plan accordingly. To avoid any delays, consider departing the area before 8:00am and returning after 11:30am. All bikers must be off the course by 11:45am so the Spear/Swift/Irish Hill/Dorset loop will be returning to normal traffic patterns by that time. Another modification from last year’s event is that the shorter race that was run on Saturday afternoon on this same course has been moved to Sunday and will not travel through South Burlington at any time.
For those with questions or concerns about the specific impacts of this event please contact Peter Delaney, or any member of the RunVermont staff, at 802-863-8412 or [email protected]. We’re committed to making this event a success for all involved, and that certainly includes the local community.
And don’t forget, just like the marathon, feel free to register to compete if you like. Peoples United Bank has worked closely with USA Triathlon to provide 100 spots dedicated to Vermont residents in the Sprint competition, with proceeds going to Vermont Special Olympics. If competing isn’t your cup of tea, consider volunteering. Competition and volunteer registration available at www.runvermont.org/usat.
Respectfully,
Peter Delaney
