LABOR DAY WEEKEND TRAFFIC SAFETY TIPS
In 2010, 390 people were killed in Labor Day weekend traffic accidents, accounting for 12 percent of total September traffic deaths that year.
The National Safety Council estimates 405 traffic fatalities and more than 40,000 injuries will occur from motor vehicle collisions over the holiday weekend this year.
The Enid Police Department is encouraging all motorists the Traffic Safety Coalition’s Five Road Safety Tips for Labor Day Weekend
1. Check your speed. Plan your route in advance and be prepared to spend more time reaching your destination rather than speeding to get there faster.
2. Obey intersection safety rules. Pedestrian and bicyclist traffic also increases during the weekend. Traffic signals and stop signs are in place to maintain safe roadways for drivers, passengers and pedestrians sharing the road.
3. Buckle up. All passengers in the vehicle should use seat belts to keep them safe in the event of an accident.
4. If you are drinking, do not drive. Designate a non-drinking driver or plan for alternative transportation.
5. Car safety check. Do a routine check of the engine, radiator, tires, steering wheel and brakes before traveling. Create an emergency kit with items, such as a flashlight, jumper wires, tire gauge and tool kit in case you encounter a problem in transit.
The Enid Police Department hopes everyone has a safe and festive holiday weekend. Please remember to buckle up and to arrange for sober transportation if drinking alcohol is part of your party plans.
