8-31-2012 EEE/WNV Update:
The results of this week’s mosquito surveillance, released 8/31/2012, include a positive finding of EEE in the same bird-biting species of mosquito in the same trap in the Pye Brook Park area. Because there is a “record of sustained activity”, the risk level for Topsfield has been raised to “Moderate.” There were no findings of WNV in Topsfield this week.

In response to the finding of mosquitoes positive for EEE in the Pye Brook Park area, targeted truck mounted spraying is scheduled for late Tuesday night, September 4, in the section of town north of Washington Street and west of Route 1.

Property owners should consider the following:

· Under optimal conditions the spray will not reach greater than 300 feet beyond the street.

· No known effect on birds.

· Night-time spraying avoids foraging bees

· No known effect on aquatic life.

· No known effect on swimming pools.

· Formula used supplies just enough mosquito adulticide to be effective on 
mosquitoes.

· All areas receiving the spray may be used the following day for outdoor activities.
 
The DPH risk level of “MODERATE" for mosquito-borne illness does not include a recommendation for curtailment of outdoor activities.
-Citizens should continue to use caution outdoors at dawn and dusk.
-Wear long sleeves and long pants at those times.
-Dump standing water on your property as this is a breeding spot for mosquitoes.
-Use insect repellent according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
