Clean Hands Save Lives
Weekly Health Tip: Clean Hands Saves Lives
The importance of this basic component of cleanliness cannot be underestimated. Clean hands save lives. Many disease causing germs are spread by hand. By properly and regularly washing your hands, you reduce the spread of disease causing germs, ranging from the common cold to far worse…
When to Wash
• Before during, and after preparing food
• Before eating food
• Before and after caring for someone who is sick
• Before and after treating a cut or wound
• After changing a diaper or cleaning a child who has used the toilet
• After you use the toilet or urinal
• After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
• After touching an animal or animal waste
• After handling pet food or pet treats
• After touching garbage
The Right Way to Wash Your Hands
• Wet your hands with clean, running water
• Rub hands together to make a lather; be sure to scrub your palms, back of your hands, between fingers, and underneath fingernails
• Continue rubbing your hands for no less than 20 seconds
• Rinse your hands well
• Use a clean towel or air dry them
If You Don’t Have Soap and Running Water
Use an alcohol based sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol. Hand sanitizers are helpful, but do not eliminate all types of germs. Additionally, they should not be used when hands are visibly dirty.
How to Use
• Apply to palm of one hand
• Rub the hands together until dry; covering all surfaces of the hands
